I love this picture. This guy is so massive and amazing.

The bison is the largest land mammal in North America. Bulls are more massive in appearance than cows, and more bearded. For their size, bison are agile and quick, capable of speeds in excess of 30 mph. Each year, bison injure park visitors who approach too closely.

Bison are animals of the grasslands; they eat primarily grasses and sedges. Their massive hump supports strong muscles that allow the bison to use its head as a snowplow in winter, swinging side to side to sweep aside the snow.

Cows, calves, and some younger bulls comprise a herd. Mature bulls, however, spend most of the year alone or with other bulls. The exception is during the rut, or mating season. At this time, in late July and August, bulls seek out females. They display their dominance by bellowing, wallowing, and engaging in fights with other bulls. After retiring from Corporate America in 2014, I have been remaking myself into an mosaic artist, fine art photographer, and traveler. I cherish our US National Parks (and all our public lands) and I have a goal to visit all 62 of them and I'm over halfway there having visited 33 (our dog has been to 22 parks!). I love to experience nature via hiking, biking, and especially from my portable hammock! I have learned over time that I can do things I never thought would be possible. Through determination and persistence, I've become a fine art photographer, ridden my bike across Iowa (RAGBRAI), hiked the Grand Canyon several times, and summited Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
