Description
At the southern end of Lake Taupo, the three active volcanic mountains of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe make up Tongariro National Park. Mount Ngauruhoe was digitally altered to appear as Mt Doom, and other sites in the park were used in the Lord of the Rings
We had been in the area around the volcanoes for a few days, but the weather was rainy and the volcanoes chose to remain in the mist. So, we decided to go bungy jumping (well, my husband was going to bungy jump). I fell on the way to the bungy jump start and broke my ankle. I didn't think it was broken--just thought it was badly sprained. My husband went bungy jumping while I had a bag of peas on my ankle and a bottle of wine for my pain.
A few days later, the weather cleared and we decided to see the volcanoes by plane. I captured this image of the three volcanoes on that flight. It was an amazing adventure and I hope to one day return and do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing which is regarded as one of the world's best one day hikes.
